CBC Saskatchewan is pleased to share that its extended version of "Golden Opportunity," a documentary about the Indian Head Rockets all-Black baseball team in the 1950s, has been nominated in the Best of Saskatchewan category at the Yorkton Film Festival. There will be a free screening on Saturday, May 27 10:15 a.m. in the Ravine Room at the Gallagher Centre (455 Broadway St. W., Yorkton) followed by a brief Q&A with director Dan Plaster and producer Natascia Lypny.
The Indian Head Rockets was one of several all-Black teams that competed across the Prairies in the 1940s and 1950s, providing Black and Cuban players an opportunity that was hard to access in the United States – and offered the small communities where they played rich entertainment. Last year, the team was inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame. CBC Saskatchewan interviewed two remaining players, as well as people who acknowledge the historical significance of these teams. Read more here:
